Over $16 billion was appropriated to weatherize homes and make buildings more energy efficient through the stimulus package passed earlier this year. This, in fact, temporarily increases weatherization resources by 10 times previous funding levels.
Over half of the funds will go to benefit households with low incomes. Families can receive up to $6,500 in energy efficiency improvements to their homes. Multi-family and public assisted housing are also eligible for the funding.
The community benefits of the weatherization and energy efficiency dollars are three-fold: job creation, energy conservation, and helping reduce the cost of living for lower income families.
September ’09 Update: Minnesota will receive an additional $132 million in weatherization and energy efficiency funds over the next two years through the stimulus package passed earlier this year. With these resources, an estimated 16,858 households will see their home become more energy efficient. If this presents any challenge, it is that existing agencies that do weatherization and energy efficiency updates will have to greatly increase their capacity and staff on a short-term basis.
